Canvey Island Cricket Club Results
Weekend June 9th- 10th
Saturday
Canvey Island 1
229-7
Terling
54 all out
Canvey won by 175 runs
Canvey strolled to one of their biggest
ever victories over a hapless Terling outfit. While the Islanders
filled their boots on a fantastic batting wicket, Terling could hardly
get the ball off the square. Dave Knox (2 for 11), Russell Abbott (2
for 4) and John Gunn (3 for 5) were virtually unplayable, conceding
only 20 runs between them from their 22 overs. Spinner Terry Cockell
wrapped up proceedings by mopping up the tail to finish with 3 for 22.
Earlier in the day, a grafting innings of 57 from skipper Neil Casson
provided the backbone of the Canvey effort. He shared in entertaining
partnerships with Terry Snowdon (25) and Russell Abbott (60), as
Canvey scored in excess of 200. The attention of the team now turns to
the top-of-the-table clash next weekend with Herongate II.
Bluehouse 3
203-6
Canvey Island 2
171 all out
Canvey lost by 32 runs
More batting heroics by in-form John
Scammell were not enough to prevent Canvey 2's from slipping to
another defeat on Saturday at the hands of Bluehouse 3's. Scammell
looked in excellent touch as he scored exactly 50 as Canvey set off in
pursuit of 204 for victory. In partnership with Dave Higgins an
unlikely win looked possible, but once both Higgins (41) and Scammell
were dismissed in quick succession the Canvey innings fell away.
Higgins had been the main man with the ball, returning figures of 3
for 26 from 12 miserly overs. A lack of support bowling proved to be
the Canvey undoing with 136 coming from 21 overs from the change
bowlers. If the Islanders can rectify this problem then they will have
a chance to notch their first win of the season next week against
Rayleigh III.
Sunday
Great Burstead
233-9
Canvey Island
109 all out
Canvey lost by 124 runs
Canvey clearly missed the presence of their
inspirational captain Paul Ward on Sunday as they slipped to an
ignominious defeat at the hands of a powerful Great Burstead side on
Sunday. No batsman could cope with the Burstead attack, as only three
men managed to post double figures. John Gunn (27) and Rob Eve (21)
delayed the inevitable, but things could have been a lot different if
Canvey had been able to field a full-strength side. A century opening
stand from Scarfe and Reid had earlier set the scene for Burstead,
their innings only being checked by a season's best bowling
performance from off-spinner Julian Curtis. He took 4 for 37 in ten
impressive overs, but with the only support coming in the shape of
paceman Dave Knox (3 for 40) Canvey were always likely to come out
second best. |
