Saturday
Canvey Island I
231-2
Bluehouse II
79 all out
Canvey won by 152 runs
Another league century from the red-hot bat of Paul Ward was
the highlight of this game. Ward has always been something of a nemesis
of the Bluehouse team and today was no exception. After a slow start in
company with Peter Cook (42), Ward moved up several gears in the final
15 overs, to finish unbeaten on 105, his third career ton against
Bluehouse. With splendid support from Richie Burrill (41 not out) in the
final few overs, Ward was able to guide Canvey to another total in
excess of 200. Early breakthroughs from John Gunn (1 for 5) and Richie
Burrill (2 for 19) left Bluehouse struggling, and the introduction of
Terry Cockell’s unique brand of left-arm spin saw them collapse
completely. Cockell claimed 4 for 11 as Canvey swept to an emphatic 152
run win.
Canvey Island II
286-2
Hullbridge II
209-7
Canvey won by 77 runs
With the first team also losing only two wickets, Canvey II’s
put on another run-feast on Saturday to notch up their second win of the
league season against a hapless side.
Two massive partnerships provided the highlights, Dave Shroder hitting
70 out of 175 for the first wicket, and Dave Higgins, a vigorous 76 in a
partnership of 106 for the second wicket. Keeping both men company was
John Scammell, who in his first game back as skipper smashed an unbeaten
100, his first Canvey century. Hullbridge never looked interested in
chasing the huge victory target and instead settled for batting out the
overs in search of bonus points. As a result no bowler excelled, the
highlight coming when Mark Gorman theatrically pulled a hamstring in his
third over to rule himself out of the game.
Sunday
Castle Brook
74 all out
Canvey Island
75-0
Canvey won by 10 wickets
Very
little can be said about this strangest of strange games on Sunday at
Smallgains. Obviously under the misapprehension that they were playing
only a 20 over slog Castle Brook came out and attempted to smash
everything from the first ball. Three wickets fell in the first 5 overs,
and there could have been several more run-outs as the Castle Brook
batsmen engaged in tip-and-run. The innings was all over after only 20
overs, and Gary Snowdon (37 not out) and Gary Burton (27 not out) wasted
little time in knocking off the total, wrapping up the match by 10
wickets at 4.25 in the afternoon.
