Canvey Island Cricket Club Results
Weekend 7th - 8th July
SUPER SNOWDON SMASHES FIRST FIFTY
Saturday
Canvey Island 1
123 all out
Sandon Sports 126-5
Canvey lost by 5 wickets
A maiden fifty from veteran Gary Snowdon
was the highlight of the day, overshadowing all else. Usually a
paceman, Snowdon has been sidelined from bowling duty with an injured
shoulder, but that has not stopped him from making his usual lusty
contribution at the tail of the batting order. With a previous best of
49, little was expected of him as he came to the crease with Canvey
reeling at 49 for 7. However, eight crisp boundaries took him to the
verge of achieving his lifetime ambition, and after last man Lee Banks
played out an agonising maiden at the other end, Snowdon crashed a
final boundary to take him to the magical 50. After playing over a
thousand games for the club it was an emotional moment, and Snowdon's
joy was shared by all his teammates.
As for the game, Canvey were undone by a superb spell of 6 for
21 from Gobel, and despite Snowdon's heroics they never recovered,
with Marlow (63 n.o.) seeing Sandon home to an easy win. However,
without doubt the day belonged to one man - Gary Snowdon.
BURTON BLUDGEONS WRITTLE TO BRING EASY WIN
Writtle 3
130-9
Canvey Island 2
131-5
Canvey won by 5 wickets
Canvey strolled to their third consecutive
league win on Saturday thanks to an explosive performance from
all-rounder Gary Burton. In harness with Phil Walker (3 for 13) and
John Gunn (3 for 33), Burton reduced Writtle to 130 for 9 in their 45
overs, leaving Canvey with a relatively simple target. With 45 overs
to score only 131 for victory Canvey could afford to take it easy, but
Burton batted like a man in danger of missing the last bus home. He
cracked 14 fours in a majestic 92, as Canvey cruised home in only 21
overs. If the Islanders can continue their winning ways they will be
pushing for promotion only a few weeks after looking like not winning
a game all season.
SUNDAY SLUMP ENDS AS KNOX AND EVE HIT FORM
Sunday
Canvey Island
173-7
Leigh Centurion
143 all out
Canvey won by 30 runs
A
sensational display of fast bowling by Rob Eve was the catalyst for
Canvey's second Sunday victory of the season. Opening the bowling at
the beginning of the Centurion reply, Eve removed the top order in a
hostile spell to finish with 4 for 12, all four victims being caught
behind by 'keeper Darren Wainer. He was ably assisted by John Gunn,
who removed Centurion dangerman Bacon (56) and then cleaned up the
tail to finish with 3 for 5 from 4 classy overs. A second fine innings
in as many weeks by Dave Knox set Canvey on the way to their
match-winning total of 173. He followed up last week's 41 with a solid
60, putting on a fine stand of 90 for the third wicket with Gary
Burton, who weighed in with a belligerent 48. From this position of
strength Canvey were always in control, and ran out comfortable
winners by 30 runs. |
