Weekend May 6th
Sunday
Pegasus
241-6
Canvey Island
140 all out
Canvey Island lost by 101 runs
The Canvey Island Cricket Club season
started with more of a whimper than a bang on Sunday as they slumped
to a crushing defeat at the hands of Pegasus. A lack of match practice
was evident in all departments as Canvey were comprehensively out-
batted, out-bowled and out-fielded. Things started badly for the
Islanders as the Pegasus opening pair cruised to a 134 run partnership
before the initial breakthrough was made, Ben Davis removing B. Francis
for 73. However, M. Sayers with an unbeaten 122 remained untroubled
and despite a penetrative spell of 3 for 29 from Paul Ward, guided
Pegasus to a mammoth 241 from their 40 overs. The Canvey reply got off
to a terrible start, with three batsmen back in the pavilion before
the end of the tenth over. Too many of the Islanders' batsmen
contributed to their own downfalls with succession of poor shots. Only
a defiant 63 not out from all-rounder Richie Burrill saw Canvey pass
the 100-mark. N. King wrapped things up for Pegasus, claiming 4 for 32
in the process. With the league season commencing next weekend, Canvey
will be hoping that they can shake off the ring-rustiness, which was
all too characteristic in this disappointing display.
