Weekend 6th- 7th July
Saturday
Canvey Island I
282-2
Purleigh II
89 all out
Canvey won by 193 runs
Paul Ward and Les Burrill were the stars of
another scintillating Canvey performance on Saturday as the first team
romped to their biggest win of the season. Ward continued the fine
form he has shown all season, smashing 154 with 19 fours and 4 sixes.
He was particularly severe on the returning opening bowler C. Wilson
who disappeared for 20 in his comeback over. Les Burrill, coming in at
number four, joined in the fun contributing to an entertaining third
wicket partnership of 130. He finished the innings unbeaten on 62, his
first fifty of the season. Gary Burton and Terry Cockell then got into
the act with the ball, both taking three wickets apiece. Richie
Burrill chipped in with another couple of wickets to propel Canvey to
a mammoth 193 run winning margin.
Hockley III
175-9
Canvey Island II
60 all out
Canvey lost by 115 runs
Steve Stacey provided the star turn for
Canvey on Saturday, returning a superb bowling analysis in only his
second game of the season of 5 for 27. This helped to restrict Hockley
III to a total of 175 from their 45 overs. It looked to be an
eminently attainable total, and should have been within Canvey’s
grasp, but they started badly, with both openers back in the pavilion
for ducks. Things didn’t get much better as the innings went on with
only Dave Shroder (10), Sam Collins (11) and Stacey (20) making double
figures. M. Robins took 6 for 34 for Hockley, to condemn Canvey to
their lowest total of the season and a comprehensive defeat.
Sunday
Willingale
150-3
Canvey Island
151-4
Canvey won by 6 wickets
Canvey came through with a fine victory on
Sunday in a tight finish against Willingale. Set 151 to win after a
fine display in the field, particularly from Steve Stacey who claimed
2 for 24 from 11 hostile overs, Canvey crawled slowly towards the
target from the outset, and in the face of some extremely tight
Willingale bowling looked to be a long way behind the asking rate
after 20 overs. However, experienced duo Paul Ward and John Gunn were
more than familiar with the situation and planned the acceleration to
perfection. Coming together at 22 for 2, the pair put on 102 for the
third wicket, Ward eventually falling for a well-made 70. Gunn saw
Canvey home in the penultimate over, finishing 41 not out.
