Canvey Island I
184 all out
Eastwood
152 all out
Canvey won by 32 runs
John Gunn
was once again the hero for Canvey revenge was gained over an Eastwood
side sitting pretty at the top of the league and unbeaten going into
the reverse of the opening fixture of the season. On that occasion
Canvey had been humbled, scoring only 94 runs and going down by 8
wickets. How the story was different this time around. Paul Ward (77)
and Neil Casson (34) set the ball rolling with their trademark century
stand for the first wicket. Ward was particularly severe on the
opening attack who had created such havoc at Eastwood, belting a
towering six over square leg to bring up his fifty. Once those two
were out, the jitters sit in with the innings folding for the addition
of only 81 runs for the final nine wickets. Leake proved to be the
pick of the bowlers, returning a remarkable 8 for 38 with his slow
dobblers. The total of 184 looked about 20 or 30 runs short of a good
score on the usual flat Smallgains wicket, but after Gary Snowdon (3
for 47) made some early incisions in the top order there was no way
back for Eastwood as they fell further behind the rate. In the midst
of this John Gunn embarked on a masterful spell of seam bowling,
chipping in with regular wickets on his way to a match-winning 5 for
36. This win leaves Canvey with an outside chance of promotion with
the second grudge match with Fyfield only three weeks away.

Canvey Island II
141-6
Canvey won by 4 wickets
A superb
all-round showing with bat and ball brought Canvey another welcome
league victory at Raleigh on Saturday. Young Richard Foot started
things off by ripping out the top order with his medium pace swingers
on his way to season-best figures of 3 for 27. Stand-in captain Darren
Wainer then took over, sending down a miserly ten over spell of nippy
seamers, and claiming 3 for 20 in the process. Contributions all the
way down the order helped Canvey on their way to the victory target of
141, Paul Synnott providing the stand-out contribution, once again
proving why he is currently the second highest run scorer in the club,
with an aggressive 42. Fresh from his maiden fifty last week, Rikki
Broadmore chipped in with 23 to see Canvey home by 4 wickets.
Sunday
Wickford
125-9
Canvey Island 126-8
Canvey won by 2 wickets
While the
margin of victory might suggest that the game was close the reality
was anything but as Canvey strolled to as comprehensive 2 wicket win
as you are likely to see. Once again it was the youngsters who stepped
up, putting in some quality performances in both parts of the game.
Sam Collins started things off with a superb spell of left-arm pace,
cleaning out the first three batsmen on his way to figures of 3 for
27. Veteran Gary Snowdon claimed 2 for 3 from 8 miserly overs to
restrict Wickford to only 125 on a decent Canvey wicket. Darren Wainer
caressed the bowling around for a season-best 33 to kick-start the
reply, and after a mid-innings wobble, Nathan Collins steadied the
ship with a cultured 36. Collins fell shortly before the end, but
captain John Gunn stood firm to see the side home with an over to
spare.
