Canvey Island Cricket Club Results

Weekend 4th May

Saturday
Canvey Island I            241-5
Purleigh II                    131 all out
Canvey won by 110 runs

Like a greyhound out of the traps, Canvey I raced to their first win of the league season in their season-opener. The foundation was laid by the two openers Paul Ward (83) and Peter Cook (66) who set the tone for the whole game by flaying the bowling to all parts during an opening stand of 117. Both batsmen made it look easy on a pitch which was far from being the flat track their scores would suggest. Both men cleared the rope, but the honour of hitting the biggest shot of the day belonged to Les Burrill during his cameo 15 when he deposited the ball over the trees into the next field. With a score of 241 to defend victory was inevitable, even more so once Gary Burton sliced through the Purleigh line-up on his way to 5 for 25. A clinical performance from all concerned.

Hockley III                   189-8
Canvey Island II            85 all out
Canvey lost by 104 runs

While the first team were destroying Purleigh, the second team were experiencing almost the exact opposite sensation as they found themselves on the wrong end of a drubbing at the hands of Hockley III. About the only thing that went right was the winning of the toss, but as he so often does skipper Ken Roberts elected to field, which merely allowed Hockley to unleash their South African import Coetezee on the unsuspecting Canvey bowlers. Particularly severe on the second string seamers, Coetezee smashed 83 before becoming one of Les Norton’s two victims in his comeback match for the club. Darren Wainer with 4 for 41 was the pick of the Canvey bowlers. The least said about the run-chase the better, as only three men made double figures, Roberts top scoring with 20.
