RAIN ALMOST ROBS CANVEY OF VICTORY CHARGE
Saturday
Danbury
118 all out
Canvey Island
120-3
Canvey won by 7 wickets
The rain almost conspired to rob Canvey of
a deserved victory against Danbury. The match ended in near farcical
conditions with the rain coming down in biblical proportions and the
pitch becoming increasingly unplayable. After three earlier stoppages
neither team wanted to come off the field until the winning runs were
scored. Paul Ward (49 not out) and Richie Burrill (37) coped best with
the conditions but batting was never easy in the rain. Conditions had
been much easier earlier on, but Danbury failed to make the best of a
good start and succumbed to the swing and seam of Phil Walker (4 for
23) and John Gunn (4 for 39). Only two men scored more than 10 as
Canvey bowled and fielded well to restrict Danbury to an eminently
gettable target. This win keeps Canvey in the hunt at the top of the
league, with the clash with main rivals South Woodham Ferrers only a
couple of weeks away.
SUPER SCAMMELL AND SYNNOTT
STOPPED BY WEATHER
Canvey Island 2
178-5
Chignal Smealy
75-1
Match abandoned
Rain brought a premature end to this
absorbing clash. With the match delicately poised the players were
forced from the field and were unable to return. This was hard luck in
particular for John Scammell (66) and Paul Synnott, who with a
season’s best 36 not out, had batted Canvey into a position of
strength. Scammell has been in sublime form this season and his 66 was
the fifth time he has passed fifty in the league already. Unfortunately
his efforts were all in vain as nature had the final word.
CANVEY CRUISE TO SIMPLE SUNDAY WIN
Sunday
West Billericay
112 all out
Canvey Island
115-2
Canvey won by 8 wickets
Smallgains played host to a rather
one-sided encounter on Sunday as Canvey easily overcame an under strength
West Billericay side. John Gunn (45 not out) and Gary Snowdon (27 not
out) saw Canvey home to a modest victory target of 113, with Snowdon
smashing two gigantic sixes off Drew. His lusty efforts placed into
stark perspective the earlier difficulties of the West Billericay
batsmen to come to terms with the Canvey attack. They were always on the
back foot once Paul Ward (2 for 10) had ripped out both openers, and
with the heart exposed Dave Knox (3 for 9) took full advantage. But for
a spirited captain’s innings from R. Simmons (56) this would hardly
have been a game at all.
