Canvey Island Cricket Club Results
Weekend 31st May – 1st June 03
Saturday
Springfield III
164 all out
Canvey Island I
167-6
Canvey won by 4 wickets
Canvey squeaked home by
four wickets against Springfield in a tighter match than the score
might suggest. Veteran seamer Gary Snowdon bowled Canvey into a
winning position with 5 for 36 to reduce Springfield to 164 all out,
one over short of their full allocation. On a normal Smallgains pitch
this would have been at least 50 below par, but this was no ordinary
pitch. Scoring was difficult, with the surface unusually two-paced.
Canvey started slowly in reply, Terry Snowdon (36) strangely subdued.
But Peter Cook (36 not out) and Russell Abbott (19 not out) injected
some much needed impetus at just the right moment, Cook smashing three
glorious fours in one over to take Canvey to their target with three
overs to spare.
Canvey Island II
251-9
Eastwood IV
232-7
Canvey won by 19 runs
The scoreline flattered a
poor Eastwood side in this fixture, which turned into a bit of a
run-fest at Belfairs. In a match not short of controversy Canvey took
full advantage of some wayward bowling after a shaky start to post 251
for 9 in their 45 overs. Paul Synnott (71) and Dave Higgins (84)
scored the bulk of the runs in a partnership of 159 for the 5th
wicket. Synnott, in particular, was at his imperious best, caressing
the bowling for ten boundaries. Higgins was more rustic in his
approach, and with 49 extras the highest total of the season was
posted. Eastwood started well in their reply aided by some dubious
umpiring decisions from the home umpires, but Higgins (3 for 50)
entered the attack and immediately put the breaks on. Martin Robinson
(2 for 47) provided able support as Eastwood came up well short of
their target.
Sunday
Leigh II
172-9
Canvey Island 155 all out
Canvey lost by 17 runs
Canvey
were edged out in the local derby concluded in light rain which doused
the Smallgains ground for much of the afternoon. Canvey bowled well to
keep the Leigh scoring rate down, ex-Canvey man Peter Luker providing
a highlight with his unfortunate run-out. However, another ex-Canvey
player John Elliott (54 not out) made the most on an inexperienced
attack smashing 50 runs from the final 4 overs of the innings,
allowing Leigh to post a target about 30 runs above par. Opener Paul
Ward creamed the bowling all round the park early on, but once he fell
for a rapid 33 the wheels started to come off the Canvey reply. Darren
Wainer (26) and Les Norton (30) staged a mini-recovery, Norton
launching two mighty sixes over the square leg boundary. Their 59 run
partnership put Canvey in sight of victory, but both were dismissed in
quick succession leaving only Gary Burton among the recognised batsmen
to see the side home. With hopes pinned on Burton he disappointingly
holed out to mid-off and Canvey’s hopes evaporated.
