Canvey Island Cricket Club Results

Weekend 30th June - 1st July

Saturday
Mountnessing             226-7
Canvey Island 1         174 all out
Canvey lost by 52 runs

Canvey slumped to their first league defeat of the season as they were outplayed by Mountnessing on Saturday. Despite having a side packed with batsmen they were unable to chase a total in excess of 200 having earlier seen the Mountnessing batters thrash the bowling to all parts. Ellis (50) and Staff (76) were particularly severe on Richie Burrill who went for 61 off 11 overs, and youngsters Nathan Collins and Sam Ing. Only Gary Burton (3 for 40) and Russell Abbott (2 for 33) were able to stem the flow of runs, but they were not helped by some atrocious fielding, which saw countless chances go begging. A solid 41 from skipper Neil Casson suggested that Canvey might atone for their performance in the field, but once he and Peter Cook (54) were dismissed the innings folded, the last four wickets falling for only 23 runs. This defeat was a major setback in Canvey's hopes of promotion from Division 8 and it can only be hoped that this does not set the tone for things to come in the second half of the league campaign.

Springfield 4                146 all out
Canvey Island 2           147-9
Canvey won by 1 wicket

Canvey 2's sneaked home for a nail-biting victory on Saturday to record their second league victory on the trot. They seemed to be cruising to a victory target of 147 at 121 for 3, but the loss of star openers Terry Cockell (46) and Michael Gunn (34), and middle-order hitter Dave Higgins for 24 saw a typical Canvey collapse. As last-man Terry Castille strolled to the crease a single was still required, but in company with young Ben Davis he saw Canvey over the finishing line. Phil Walker was the star of the show in the early part of the game, as he routed the Springfield middle order on the way to taking the first five-wicket haul for the club this season. His return of 5 for 20 was undoubtedly the class performance and set Canvey on the road to fine win.

 Sunday
Great Burstead 2            226-5
Canvey Island                223 all out
Canvey lost by 3 runs

Nearly 450 runs were scored on Sunday as Smallgains witnessed a classic shoot-out between two strong batting sides. Canvey looked down and out during the Burstead innings as Fleaday (87) and Carr (91) flayed the bowling to all parts. Both the bowling and the outfielding became increasingly ragged as no one was able to slow the scoring rate. Only Rob Eve with 3 for 31 emerged with any credit. However, Canvey openers Paul Ward and John Gunn were undaunted by huge victory target and set about the task with gusto. They rattled along at over 7 runs an over in an opening stand of 85 before Ward slashed one to gully to be dismissed for an entertaining 46. Gunn soon followed for 45, but the baton was effortlessly picked up by Dave Knox (41) and Darren Wainer. Wainer was particularly severe on anything short as he smashed a quickfire 37. However, the innings quickly subsided after these two were out, and it was left to last-man Trevor Poulsom to try to see Canvey home with four runs required from the final three balls. Sadly for Canvey, Poulsom was cleaned out first ball, and the Islanders narrowly failed to pull off what would have been a quite remarkable victory.
