Canvey Island Cricket Club Results

Weekend 29th September 2002

Sunday
Canvey Island       215-6
Langdon Hills        78 all out
Canvey won by 137 runs

Dave Shroder has waited a long time to hit his first ton of the season, until the last game in fact, but in his last opportunity of the year he didn’t disappoint his many fans. Shroder’s 114 also enabled him to pass the 500-run mark for the season for the first time, and their weren’t many happier faces than his at the end of the Canvey innings. After an initial blaze of boundaries, including two towering sixes on his way to his first fifty Shroder slowed down markedly, hitting the last 20 runs in singles and twos. The last game of the season always provides the opportunity for some “joke” play, and this game proved no exception. Seasoned no.11 Gary Snowdon opened the batting, but could only make 4, and Paul Ward, fresh from scoring over 2000 runs right-handed switched to batting left-handed, and still scored a crisp 5 not out at the end of the innings. But it didn’t stop there. Paul Synnott was brought on to bowl is leggies and surprised everyone, including himself, by bowling one of the best spells of the year being unlucky not to take more than 1 for 9 in his five overs. However, the main interest centred around the battle between John Gunn and Darren Wainer to claim the bowling runners-up trophy. Wainer entered the game one wicket behind Gunn, but full of confidence after his five-wicket haul the previous week. However, Gunn had other ideas and put the whole competition to bed by claiming three wickets in his first three overs, aided by a stunning one-handed slip catch from Ward. Gunn finished with 4 for 8, Wainer 2 for 11, and the game for Canvey by a 137 run margin.
