Canvey Island Cricket Club Results
Weekend 28th –29th June 03
Saturday
Canvey Island I
281-5
Great Baddow II
115 all out
Canvey won by 166 runs
Canvey
romped to a simple victory on Saturday against a poor Baddow side,
with Dave Knox the undoubted star of the show. Paceman Knox, trading
on past glories to keep him in the side, had endured a dismal run of
form this season, going into the match without opening his account for
the season. Ten overs later he had categorically put that statistic to
bed, walking off the pitch with 5 for 28 including a sparkling
hat-trick, capped by a caught and bowled chance gleefully accepted
with a polite “Thank you”. John Gunn also weighed in with 5 for 9
from 8 accurate overs, Baddow losing all ten wickets for only 30 runs
in the space of 17 overs. The game started inauspiciously for the home
side, Willis taking 13 deliveries to complete his first over, and
Curitson being clouted all round the park by Paul Ward (81) and Darren
Wainer (29) in their opening stand of 116. Paul Synnott added a
measured 45 on a pitch that was deceptively difficult to score on, but
it was Knox who took all the plaudits, and the match ball.
Ecko
Monarchs
113 all out
Canvey Island II
116-2
Canvey won by 8 wickets
Canvey
notched up a routine win over the league’s bottom side at Smallgains
on Saturday. Ecko lived up to their billing by performing poorly in
all disciplines, chiefly in the batting where only three men passed
double figures. As has been so often the case this season, Dave
Higgins cashed in with another five wicket bag. Mark Gorman also
claimed 2 for 21 in a hostile opening burst. Chasing only 114 to win
it was left to Paul Robinson and Nathan Collins (13 not out) to
complete the formalities. Robinson hit his highest score for the club,
finishing on 38 not out, as the game was over within 17 overs.
Sunday
Canvey Island
159-7
Burnham
162-5
Canvey lost by 5 wickets
Rikki
Broadmore provided the main highlight of the day from a Canvey
perspective as they tumbled to another Sunday defeat in the difficult
surroundings of Burnham. Broadmore held the Canvey innings together
after four quick wickets fell in the opening few overs. He ended
unbeaten on 72, notching up his highest score for the club, and his
first half century in the process. John Gunn (40) provided valuable
middle-order support, but it was Broadmore who prospered, employing
the sweep to good effect blunting the young Burnham attack. S. Sims
toiled his way to 61 in reply for Burnham, falling only with the
victory line in sight as Canvey failed to take the early wickets they
needed to make a contest of it. Les Norton (2 for 34) ended up the
most successful bowler, but it is back to the drawing board for a
Canvey side who haven’t won since early May.
