BURRILL BROTHERS DO A WAUGH
Saturday
Canvey Island 1
225-6
Rankins 2
80 all out
Canvey won by 145 runs
Canvey destroyed Rankins in one of the most
one-sided contests of the season. As the Islanders slumped to 12 for 2
within the first 5 overs, Rankins must have thought they were in with
the chance of causing an upset, but little did they know what was to
come. The rest of the Canvey order chipped in to make significant
scores. Paul Ward and Richie Burrill both made 46, and will have been
kicking themselves for not going on to something bigger. But the main
highlight came from Les Burrill, who smashed a season's-best 51 not
out to steer Canvey past the 200-mark. Rankins were never in the hunt
following a fiery opening spell from Rob Eve (2 for 34), and with Gary
Burton (4 for 14) and Russell Abbott (4 for 2) bowling superbly at the
other end, the game was all over in quick time.
BENTLEY JUST TOO STRONG FOR BATTLING
CANVEY
Bentley 3
196-8
Canvey Island
160-7
Canvey lost by 36 runs
A spirited batting display by John Scammell and
Ken Roberts was not enough to bring Canvey victory on Saturday against
a strong Bentley side. Chasing a tricky target of 197 for victory,
Scammell (44) and Roberts (41) smashed Canvey into a potentially
match-winning position. However, crucially they were both dismissed
before the score topped 100, and the rest of the inexperienced batting
order could not keep up with the required run-rate. Phil Walker (3 for
43) had earlier been the pick of the bowlers as he continued his
superb bowling form, but strong Bentley contributions throughout the
top-order enabled them to post a target that ultimately proved too
tough.
WONDERFUL WARD LEADS A MASTERCLASS
Sunday
Municipal College
174-5
Canvey Island
175-3
Canvey won by 7 wickets
A brilliant 107 not out by Paul Ward led
Canvey to a superb victory against Municipal College on Sunday. The
excitement of this game provided a stark contrast with their meeting
earlier in the season, which dissolved in a disappointing draw. Not
this time though, as Ward survived a superb opening spell from Massey,
and then unleashed an array of strokes to all parts of the ground. Ben
Davis (20) shared in a 77 run opening partnership with Ward, and once
he was dismissed there were further half-century stands with Dave Knox
(10) and Gary Burton (20), as Ward dominated the bowling. N. Hanley
(57) and M. Worship (61 not out) had earlier both scored
half-centuries, with John Gunn (2 for 25) the pick of the bowlers, but
this was merely a prelude to the Ward masterclass.
