Canvey Island Cricket Club Results
Weekend 27th- 28th July
Saturday
Canvey Island I
279-5
Great Baddow II
117 all out
Canvey won by 162 runs
Even without the talismanic Paul Ward, Canvey
were still able to put on a batting masterclass at the expense of
Great Baddow on Saturday. Neil Casson leading from the front, belied
his poor form this year to hit 48 in a partnership of 123 with Terry
Snowdon for the second wicket. Snowdon motored to his fifth half
century of the season, hoisting three huge sixes in his 65. This set
the stage for Richie Burrill (58) and Darren Wainer (32 not out) to
further take advantage of a demoralised bowling attack. Three quick
wickets in another hostile spell from Steve Stacey ensured that Canvey
would be going home with maximum points. John Gunn, Gary Snowdon and
Rik Broadmore all weighed in with two wickets apiece as Canvey romped
to a 162 run victory.
Canvey Island II
98 all out
Ashingdon
99-2
Canvey lost by 8 wickets
At 43-0 you would imagine that the
foundations of a decent total would be set. When Canvey are involved
anything is possible, even to the tune of losing all ten wickets for
55 runs. Mark Gorman (24) and evergreen Terry Castille (28) provided
Canvey with such a start against league-leading Ashingdon, but then
the whole innings fell completely to pieces, handing the home side one
of their simplest wins of the season. Gorman completed a useful
all-round day with one of the two Ashingdon wickets to fall, but
ultimately this was a day to forget.
Sunday
President’s XI 202-3
Canvey Island
204-6
Canvey won by 4 wickets
The current Canvey side came out on top in a
nail-biter against a select President’s XI of past favourites on
Sunday. Russell Abbott, guesting for the main side, was the catalyst
for the victory, keeping his head with the bat, and guiding his team
home with a fighting 92 not out. Ably assisted by Dave Knox (24 not
out) he provided the acceleration and impetus at just the required
moment to send the old boys to defeat. Earlier it had seemed that the
President’s XI were going to walk it with ease, both openers
retiring upon reaching their individual fifties. But veteran Terry
Castille snared the prize wicket of Peter Luker, and the home side
never looked back. That said, a great day was had by all, and it was
great to see many of the old familiar faces back on the island, all
credit going to Fred Abbott for organising such a splendid fixture.
