Canvey Island Cricket Club Results

Weekend 27th-28th April

Saturday
Bluehouse II                146 all out
Canvey Island              127 all out
Canvey lost by 19 runs

On paper this looked like a difficult opening friendly fixture of the season for Canvey and so it proved as they were made to look second best by a Bluehouse side that they will encounter in the league later in the season. A defiant 75 from John Gunn apart, the Canvey batsmen failed to fire as they chased a modest Bluehouse total. Paul Ward (26) sparkled briefly with the bat, but with no one else able to stay with Gunn all the good work from Gary Snowdon earlier in the day went to waste. Back from injury Snowdon produced a vintage performance to snare 4 for 26, ably assisted by four catches from Ward. However, Lovatt’s 49 not out proved pivotal for Bluehouse as they racked up a match-winning total of 146.

Sunday
Canvey Island                    160-4
Eversley Park                    77 all out
Canvey won by 83 runs

Canvey gave Eversley Park a right royal smacking on Sunday to chalk up their first win of the season. Ben Davis provided the main highlight with a fluent 52 not out, which fully banished the memories of his second ball duck the day before. Assisted by decent contributions from John Gunn (32), Paul Ward (26) and Les Burrill (22), Davis ensured that Canvey would post a sizeable target. The target was made to look even better once Terry Cockell tore into the Eversley Park line-up with his unmistakable brand of unorthodox left-arm spin. Cockell finished with 5 for 26 to claim the first fifer of the season for Canvey. Young Rik Broadmore brought the game to  swift conclusion, taking the final wicket with his very first ball for the club.
