Canvey Island Cricket Club Results
Weekend
26-27th July 03
Saturday
Fyfield
182-8
Canvey Island I
32-1
Match abandoned
Rain put paid to this
must-win clash between the sides lying second and third in Division 6
and fighting hard for the final promotion position. Canvey were in
greater need of victory and would have fancied their chances after
restricting Fyfield to only 182 in their innings. It could have been
even better for Canvey if keeper Peter Cook had snaffled an early
stumping off Bridge, who was missed before getting off the mark and
went on to top-score with 87. Richie Burrill (3 for 38) and Dave Knox
(4 for 42) were the pick of the Canvey attack. With the rain falling
Canvey started their reply in lightening fashion, but with the
dismissal of Paul Ward for 23 the chances of victory diminished and
the game was abandoned with the conditions worsening.
Canvey Island II
174 all out
Pegasus & Corringham III
20-1
Match abandoned
Persistent rain also forced
the abandonment of this clash with the match delicately poised. A good
batting performance from the Canvey top order had manoeuvred them into
a decent position. Martin Robinson (35) and Ken Roberts (61) provided
the highlights, putting on 65 for the first wicket. Sam Collins also
chipped in with 29 as Canvey totalled 174. An early wicket for skipper
Darren Wainer pushed Pegasus onto the back foot, but at this point the
rain intervened and the game was destined for an early finish.
Sunday
Eversley Park
190-6
Canvey Island 149 all out
Canvey lost by 41 runs
Another
defeat for Canvey on Sunday was overshadowed by a horrific injury to
veteran Les Norton, who suffered a broken collarbone in attempting a
diving catch. Norton was rushed off to Basildon Hospital as the rest
of the team tried to regroup and focus on the match in hand. Clearly
this incident affected the Canvey bowlers as they struggled to find a
decent line and length. Darren Wainer proved a notable exception to
this, returning excellent figures of 2 for 38 with the new ball.
Evergreen Gary Snowdon with 2 for 30 and John Gunn (2 for 30) provided
some support, but a total of 190 for Eversley Park was always likely
to test a weakened Canvey batting line up. Fresh from his exemplary
bowling spell, Wainer starred with the bat, smashing his first
half-century in three years on his way to 53. Sadly he received no
support, and only a typically agricultural 29 from no.11 Snowdon
prevented a heavier defeat.
