Canvey Island Cricket Club Results
Weekend 26th-27th April
Saturday
Canvey Island 188-6
Bluehouse
134-8
Canvey won by 54 runs
Canvey got the new season
underway with the traditional battle against Bluehouse. A traditional
result ensued with Canvey running out winners, continuing the habit
built up over the last few meetings between the sides. Paul Ward
showed little signs of rust in his rather rustic 59, the top-scorer of
the Canvey innings. Paul Synnott (32) and Richie Burrill (26) showed
much more fluency, but batting wasn’t easy on a strip juiced up by
the rain earlier in the week. Having only allowed Bluehouse to bowl
one maiden in the entire innings, Canvey’s Darren Wainer showed
everyone how it should be done, sending down 31 consecutive deliveries
before conceding a run, a magnificent way to start the season en route
to figure of 1 for 6 from 7 overs. Julian Curtis (2 for 27) proved to
be the most successful bowler on his return from a season-long
self-imposed exile.
Sunday
Brentwood
172-7
Canvey Island 156 all out
Canvey lost by 16 runs
Canvey
and Brentwood played out a thriller on Sunday at the old county ground
with Mark Gorman’s heroics with the bat counting for nothing in the
final reckoning. Despite showing few glimpses of the old form last
season, Gorman struck a crisp 17 to put Canvey in sight of victory,
but as so often happens he remained stranded following last-man Gary
Snowdon’s heave at a straight one. John Scammell (37) and Peter Cook
(44) had earlier put Canvey up with the required rate after the
bowlers had put in a superb show on a flat, unresponsive pitch.
Brentwood got off to a rapid start, but Snowdon (1 for 33) and John
Gunn (2 for 27) applied the brakes. However, the target proved too
stiff and Canvey crashed to their first defeat of the season.
