RAMPANT CANVEY SMASH 300 AGAIN IN CRUSHING WIN
Saturday
Canvey Island 1
313-5
Herongate 2
148 all out
Canvey won by 165 runs
Canvey earned maximum points in the chase
for the title as they posted a score in excess of 300 for the second
week running. Taking advantage of the short straight boundaries at the
picturesque Herongate ground, three men notched fifties as the ball
disappeared out of the ground on seven separate occasions. Opener Paul
Ward (73) the first to reach his half-century, closely followed by
Richie Burrill (78) and Russell Abbott (58 not out). Burrill followed
up his ton last week with another classical knock, full of trademark
cover drives. After a slow start Abbott also showed his ability, twice
depositing the ball in the road for towering sixes. Despite the
oppressive heat Abbott returned to claim three wickets with the ball
as the Herongate innings faltered. However, the plaudits were taken by
unorthodox left-arm spinner Terry Cockell. He bamboozled the
lower-order on his way to season’s-best figures of 5 for 42. With
only one game left in the league season the title is still up for
grabs. Only a win will do against Mountnessing, with all eyes on
Woodham Mortimer, where the Islanders will be hoping that South
Woodham slip up.
HIGGINS HEROICS IN VAIN AS CANVEY FALL AT LAST HURDLE
Hockley 3
192 all out
Canvey Island 2
152 all out
Canvey lost by 40 runs
A magnificent 88 from Dave Higgins was not
enough to save Canvey from defeat at the hands of Hockley, who notched
their first league win of the season. Coming in at 39 for 6 the game
looked completely out of reach, but Higgins had other ideas as he
launched a blistering assault on the Hockley bowlers. Twelve
boundaries and three sixes later, Canvey were in with a sniff of
victory, but then fate intervened. A mix up with Dan Flewers saw
Higgins stranded and the chance of victory snuffed out. Defeat was
also hard on evergreen seamer Terry Castille, who had earlier claimed
season’s-best bowling figures of 5 for 22. With only pride to play
for in the final league game next week, Canvey will be hoping that
their season ends with a bang rather than a whimper.
