Canvey Island Cricket Club Results
Weekend 24th – 25th May
Saturday
Canvey Island I
103 all out
Fyfield
106-4
Canvey lost by 6 wickets
Canvey
stumbled to a second league defeat in three games to send their
assault on the Division Six title into a tailspin. The Fyfield match
was always likely to provide a difficult test, as it did last season,
but no one quite expected the much-vaunted batting line-up to fail
away from home for the second time in a row. Conditions were not great
for batting with a wet pitch and long outfield hardly offering full
value for the stroke, but Canvey were up against it from the third
ball when the first wicket fell. Russell Abbott (29) top-scored but
found piercing the infield almost impossible. A total of 103 was
always likely to be about 30 runs short and so it proved as Fyfield
inched their way to the target from 38 overs, but crucially for the
loss of only 4 wickets. Abbott also proved the most successful bowler
with 2 for 45, but it was another day to forget for the Canvey boys.
Pegasus
& Corringham III 176
all out
Canvey Island II 181-3
Canvey won by 7 wickets
Canvey
put last week’s batting debacle firmly behind them with a good win
against Pegasus on Saturday at Smallgains. A good bowling display from
Mark Gorman (3 for 45) and Sean Peters (2 for 38), ably backed up by
skipper Dave Higgins (4 for 19) with his medium-pace wobblers ensured
that Canvey were chasing an eminently gettable target. Following on
from a brief cameo from Peter Cook (26), Ken Roberts (60) and Martin
Robinson (56) played as if their dinner was getting cold, smashing the
ball to all parts to get the match over quickly. Both men were
dismissed shortly before the end, but Michael Gunn (16 not out)
entered into the spirit by winning the game with a towering six to
climax a satisfactory day for the Islanders.
Sunday
Canvey Island
174-9
West Billericay
135-9
Canvey won by 39 runs
West
Billericay visited Smallgains for their routine beating on Sunday, and
it was duly administered again, although this time with the match
proving more competitive than recent encounters. Early wickets gave
West Billericay hope, but Gary Burton (36) and Ricky Broadmore (33)
started the re-building effort for Canvey, and Paul Ward coming in at
no.8 injected some much needed late innings impetus with a chancy 51.
Young Richard Foot (3 for 11) made some inroads into the West
Billericay reply and when Terry Cockell claimed 2 for 10 with his
left-arm spin Canvey were well and truly on top. The run out of the
dangerous Tim Loader sealed the win by 39 runs.
