Canvey Island Cricket Club Results

Weekend 24th August 2002

Saturday
Canvey Island              192-6
Fyfield                         133-7
Canvey won by 59 runs

Canvey emerged victorious in this top-of-the-table clash to put themselves within touching distance of the Division 7 title. The victory owed much to a typical hard-working team performance, most notably from Russell Abbott, who etched out a crucial 13 not out at the death of the Canvey innings, and then bowled 12 overs of penetrating pace on a difficult wicket to return figures of 3 for 30. Paul Ward and John Gunn had done much to set Canvey on the way to a decent target. Gunn made light of the pitch vagaries and excellent new ball bowling to hit 32 majestic runs. Ward played one of his more adhesive innings to post 53, the top score of the match, with further assistance from Terry Snowdon (27). Off-spinner Dave Shroder’s two wickets were the perfect compliment to Abbott’s fiery spell at the other end, allowing Canvey to restrict Fyfield to a mere 133 in return, and a 59 run win.

Pegasus III              179 all out
Canvey Island II      155 all out
Canvey lost by 24 runs

Another case of so near yet so far for Canvey on Saturday. Victory looked a distinct possibility with Paul Synnott (35) and Ken Roberts (43) at the crease. But as is so often the case, the departure of these two precipitated a middle-order collapse, with only Richard Foot (12) of the subsequent batsmen reaching double figures. This was harsh on veteran pacer Terry Castille, who rolled back the years in taking 4 for 35 in the Pegasus innings. He was ably supported by Mark Gorman, who returned his best bowling analysis in his first season back at the club, snaffling 3 for 31.
