Weekend 23rd June

Canvey March Past Poor Herongate

Saturday
Canvey Island 1            196-6
Herongate 2                  85 all out
Canvey won by 111 runs

This top-of-the-table clash proved to be a rather one-sided affair as a strong Canvey side overpowered Herongate on Saturday, coming out on top in all departments. The tone for the day was set by the opening partnership of 101 for the Islanders. Paul Ward (50) and Matt Snowdon (38) saw off everything the Herongate bowlers could throw at them, and proceeded to play some handsome strokes on either side of the wicket. Once they were dismissed by Fletcher the momentum was continued by Russell Abbott (24) and Gary Burton (23), as Canvey marched to an imposing 196. Abbott then returned to claim four Herongate wickets for only ten runs, and with wily spinner Terry Cockell also taking four wickets Herongate quickly subsided to a dismal 85 all out.

     Veteran Castille Castles Hockley

Canvey Island 2            143 all out
Hockley 3                     91 all out
Canvey won by 52 runs

Canvey 2 made it a win-double for the Islanders on Saturday as they registered their first win of the season against Hockley 3. Both sides came into the match without a victory, but if there were any nerves in the Canvey side they didn't show as they outclassed Hockley. Once again the backbone of the Canvey innings was provided by John Scammell. The opener is in the form of his life at the moment and cracked another entertaining 43, with 3 huge sixes. Some elegant hitting from Lee Banks (25) stretched the Canvey total to 143, which always looked to be more than enough. So it proved, as veteran Terry Castille decimated the Hockley reply with 4 for 11 leaving Canvey the victors by an impressive margin of 52 runs.
