Weekend 22nd June

Saturday
Canvey Island I            185-6

Fyfield                         186-6
Canvey lost by 4 wickets

Missing a couple of regulars Canvey slipped to their first league defeat of the season in the top of the table clash with Fyfield. Without run-machine Paul Ward, and superstar all-rounder Richie Burrill, Canvey failed to post 200 for the first time. This was hard on Terry Snowdon, who played one of the best innings of his career in making 80 not out. He was ably supported by Neil Casson, who put his recent poor batting form behind him to score 30 crucial runs against a handy Fyfield attack. Even with a lower than usual total, Canvey remained in the box-seat until the chances started going begging. Six catches were grassed, with Terry Cockell the main culprit, reprieving Fyfield skipper Gould on a number of occasions. Gould made Canvey pay for these lapses on his way to a match-winning 85, Fyfield squeezing home in the penultimate over by 4 wickets. Both Ward and Burrill will be back for the return fixture which could decide the destination of the Division 7 league title.

Canvey Island II        139 all out
Pegasus III                 140-4
Canvey lost by 6 wickets

Another day and another defeat for Canvey II’s on Saturday. If winning is a habit it is not one this team has picked up. Paul Synnott’s 32 and a typically forceful 32 from Steve Stacey in his first game of the season went to waste as the rest of the team were unable to capitalise on a decent beginning. None of the batsmen could stay with this pair, with a lack of penetration with the ball proving telling when Pegasus came to chase their target. Dave Higgins was the most successful bowler with 2 for 13, but this was never likely to prove enough, and 72 not out from A. Campbell was enough to see Pegasus comfortably home.
