Canvey Island Cricket Club Results

Weekend 22nd – 23rd September

Saturday
Canvey Island              201-4
Brittanic Lodge            141-8
Canvey won by 60 runs

Is there a worse way to get out than when on 99? If there is then try telling Paul Ward that. This was the exact fate to befall him on Saturday against Brittanic Lodge. After a scintillating display of hitting in which he three times despatched the ball over the ropes for six, Ward fell agonisingly short of a second century in consecutive weeks when he was bowled by Shah. This was scant reward for the bowler, who had earlier been murdered by both Ward and Richie Burrill, with 51 runs coming from his 8 overs. Burrill contributed an entertaining 64 to a second wicket partnership of 122, which set the platform for the Canvey victory. Trevor Fossey once again demonstrated his ability to make the early breakthrough with the ball, as he claimed 2 for 31 in a tight spell, including the crucial one of Shah, caught at deep midwicket by Ward. With Burrill also chipping in with 3 good wickets Brittanic Lodge quickly folded to fall to a 60 run defeat.

  Sunday
East Ham Corinthians           179 all out
Canvey Island                      40-4
Match abandoned

The rain came to Canvey’s aid on Sunday, with the game poised in Corinthians’ favour. Despite only having 8 men the Londoners put up an excellent display with both bat and ball. A solid innings built around 52 from T. Jackson was the backbone of the Corinthians innings. He was eventually removed by John Gunn who claimed his 50th wicket of the season in the process despite a nasty knock to the ankle. Les Burrill, in his first bowl of the season in the final game, cleaned up the tail to take 4 for 19. One wonders why he didn’t get a look-in earlier in the year after such a devastating display! B. Handscombe, who sent the first four batsmen back to the pavilion with only 16 on the board, quickly undermined Canvey’s reply. Paul Ward (17 n.o.) and Gary Snowdon (6 n.o.) were in the process of repairing the damage when the rain came down. With Ward still at the crease Canvey would have fancied their chances of pulling off a result, but the weather conspired to prevent the game reaching its climax.
