Canvey Island Cricket Club Results
Weekend 21st – 22nd June 03
Saturday
Canvey Island I
284-6
Ingatestone II
231 all out
Canvey won by 53 runs
The margin of victory makes
this result look comfortable, but the reality is far from it. Canvey
struggled to defend their highest total of the season on a cracking
Ingatestone pitch. Having piled up a mammoth 284 for 6 in their 45
overs, the match looked dead and buried. Paul Ward provided the
highlight, smashing an imperious 112 from only 25 overs. He was
particularly strong on the legside, three times depositing the ball
into the hedge running round the pitch. Neil Casson provided solid
support with a gritty 55, including 10 boundaries. Richie Burrill (53)
and Terry Snowdon (33) also contributed aggressive cameos. John Gunn
(4 for 39) and Gary Snowdon (3 for 66) took a couple of early wickets
to leave Ingatestone behind the rate, but a middle-order recovery
rescued the innings and they were left needing only 80 to win from the
final 10 overs. However, Snowdon made the vital breakthrough and the
innings subsided, Canvey running out winners by 53 runs.
Canvey Island II
245 all out
Brookweald
246-9
Canvey lost by 1 wicket
Canvey came out on the
wrong end of a thriller on Saturday, as a dubious umpiring decision in
the final over denied them a deserved victory. Paul Synnott (47) and
Martin Robinson (79) smashed the Brookweald bowling all round
Smallgains on their way to a third wicket partnership of 107, 42
extras also helping Canvey to 245, well above par. Brookweald in reply
were always up with the required asking rate, but lost regular wickets
throughout the run-chase. Mark Gorman (2 for 51) and Nathan Collins (3
for 50) started the rot, but no one else was able to penetrate. With
Brookweald nine down in the final over, a controversial LBW decision
was turned down, and the last pair were able to knock off the final
few runs.
Sunday
Canvey Island
182-9
Mulberry
183-4
Canvey lost by 6 wickets
Once again the lack of
bowling firepower was exposed on Sunday by a handy Mulberry side. With
the batting unable to play up to its full potential Canvey always
looked likely to struggle and so it proved. Paul Synnott really played
a lone hand with his innings of 58, full of powerful sweeps and his
trademark lofted drive. No other batsman passed 20, and only 41 extras
helped push the total up to 182. Canvey needed to take early wickets
to stand any chance, and despite a good opening spell from Darren
Wainer the Mulberry batsmen were able to withstand the early storm and
ease their way towards the victory target. Bridle with 92 took
Mulberry most of the way, and they crossed the line with 6 wickets in
hand. Veteran Fred Abbott returned the best figures in his return to
the side, taking 2 for 11 with his wily legspin, but it wasn’t
enough.
