WALKER AND WARD
WASTE WOODHAM
Saturday
Woodham Mortimer 2 75 all out
Canvey Island 1
76-0
Canvey won by 10 wickets
Victory could not have been any easier for
Canvey on Saturday as they crushed a pathetic Woodham Mortimer by the
massive margin of 10 wickets. Opening pair Paul Ward (40 n.o.) and Ben
Davis (27 n.o.) cruised home inside 19 overs to notch up Canvey's most
comprehensive win of the league campaign, displaying an impressive
array of strokes between them, after the bowlers had decimated the
Woodham Mortimer innings. Chief destroyer was Phil Walker who claimed
4 for 16 in a sumptuous display of quality swing bowling. Russell
Abbott (3 for 16) and Gary Burton (2 for 25) also exploited the
conditions to the full to send the Woodham batsmen packing. On a slow,
low pitch, many of the batsmen were culpable for their own downfalls
with injudicious shot selection, but that should take nothing away
from the bowlers, who performed infinitely better than their Woodham
counterparts. With Canvey showing such devastating form as the season
reaches a crucial phase, confidence of sewing up promotion should be
sky-high.
NORMAL SERVICE
RESUMED WITH NAIL-BITING WIN
FOR CANVEY
Pegasus/Corringham 3
174 all out
Canvey Island 2
175-8
Canvey won by 1 wicket
Canvey 2's bounced back from last week's
humiliation at the hands of Brookweald in style on Saturday, although
they again showed their propensity for almost snatching defeat from
the jaws of victory. After Dave Higgins (6 for 42) had bowled
superbly, assisted by some unusually athletic work in the field from
skipper Ken Roberts, who took two blinding catches, Canvey looked set
fair for victory. A fourth win in five games seemed almost assured
with John Scammell and Roberts at the crease chasing the target of
175. But from a secure 133 for 3, things started to go awry with the
dismissals of Scammell for a well-made 51, and Roberts for a powerful
49. As is usual with the second team, no one in the middle-order was
able to hang around, and it was left to the final wicket pair of Terry
Castille and Lee Banks to sneak Canvey over the winning line in a
tense finale.
GUNN FIRES
CANVEY TO TIGHT WIN
Sunday
Mulberry
118 all out
Canvey Island
119-8
Canvey won by 2 wickets
Smallgains was the scene of another tight finish
on Sunday as Canvey scraped home by 2 wickets against a stubborn
Mulberry side. At 30 for 5 chasing 119 for victory Canvey looked to be
on the wrong side of the eight-ball, but sensible batting from Paul
Synnott (24) and Gary Burton (13) saw the deficit gradually whittled
away. A classy knock from John Gunn (33 n.o.), who mixed studious
defence with controlled aggression, and aided by some bizarre field
placings from the Mulberry skipper, saw Canvey past the winning post.
Gunn was also the pick of the Canvey bowlers, claiming 4 for 11, as
the Mulberry innings folded faster than an Olympic origami champion.
Gary Burton (2 for 19), and Rob Eve (1 for 3 from 8 overs) also bowled
well on a day dominated by the ball.
