Weekend 20th May
Sunday
Canvey Island 95 all out
Westley
77 all out
Canvey won by 18 runs
The conditions contrived to create a low-scoring
thriller between Canvey and Westley on Sunday at Smallgains. With a
damp pitch and ridiculously long outfield making any sort of scoring
difficult, Canvey were indebted to another man-of-the-match
performance from Richie Burrill. Burrill has been the star of the
season so far for the Islanders and proved his worth again with a cool
34 as Canvey struggled to post a decent target. No other batsman came
to terms with the conditions as Canvey lost their last seven wickets
for only 16 runs to be all out for a modest 95.
Westley would clearly have fancied their chances, but after a
devastating opening burst from young paceman Lee Banks they were
always struggling. Banks exploited the conditions superbly to take 3
for 15 in his eight over spell. A lively partnership between Johnson
(22) and Morrison (27) brought Westley back into the game, but it was
that man Burrill who proved the match winner. A deadly spell of 3 for
6 ended Westley's hopes and saw Canvey home. |
