Canvey Island Cricket Club Results
Weekend 20th – 21st July
Saturday
Canvey Island I
311-7
Rayleigh II
204-2
Canvey won by 107 runs
It certainly wasn’t a day for being a
bowler at Smallgains on Saturday. Over 500 runs were scored for the
loss of just 9 wickets. As usual on these high-scoring occasions
Canvey came out on top. A round 50 from Dave Shroder started things
off, with Richie Burrill (71) and Paul Ward (78) joining in the fun.
Coming in at the unfamiliar no.6 position Ward certainly enjoyed
himself at the expense of opening bowler Cane, who was “caned” for
37 in two comeback overs. Lee Banks rounded off the innings with a
classy 29 not out, taking Canvey once again past the 300-mark. Things
were no different in the Rayleigh innings, with the bowlers unable to
make much of an impression, Suckling hitting an unbeaten 104, and
Harwood 74.

Canvey Island II

Canvey lost by 87 runs
Not to be outdone by his brother Nathan’s feat
last week, Sam Collins decided to get in on the wicket-taking act,
with his first five-wicket haul for the club. Collins tore out the
heart of the Brookweald middle-order with his left-arm seamers to
finish with the astonishing figures of 5 for 23 from his four overs.
Such an effort deserved a greater reward than to finish on the losing
side but that was Collins’s fate, as the Canvey batsmen failed
miserably to capitalise on their good position. Only two men reached
double figures, as the Islanders were soundly beaten by 87 runs.
Sunday
Kingfisher
129 all out
Canvey Island

Canvey lost by 9 runs
Canvey lost out in a tight finish to Kingfisher
on Sunday, despite a superb all-round performance from Steve Stacey.
Sidelined earlier in the season through injury, he more than made up
for the lost time, taking 4 for 25 and smashing 37 valuable runs with
the bat. Ironically in spite of this valiant effort it was his
dismissal that ultimately saw Canvey slip to defeat. Four ducks for
Canvey highlighted their inability to provide Stacey with the support
he needed to see Canvey home. Earlier Darren Wainer (3 for 18) had
backed up the Canvey bowling effort to good effect, restricting
Kingfisher to a seemingly attainable target.
