Canvey Island Cricket Club Results

Weekend June 2nd -3rd

Saturday
Danbury                        154 all out
Canvey Island 1            155-1
Canvey won by 9 wickets

All the headlines were taken by Paul Ward and Russell Abbott in a game which Canvey dominated from start to finish. Taking the new ball, Ward (2 for 23) and Abbott (3 for 25) restricted the Danbury men to a mere 40 runs from the first 20 overs. Only a brisk 59 from youngster Huntington prevented Danbury from subsiding to a score under 100, especially following a rampant spell from John Gunn, who destroyed the middle-order in taking a season's best 4 for 28. A target of 155 never looked like being enough against the in-form Canvey batsmen and so it proved. Shrugging off the early loss of skipper Neil Casson (23), Ward (74 not out) and Abbott (47 not out) combined for a second time in the match to see Canvey home with an unbroken second wicket stand of 116. Maybe next week they'll let someone else have a game!!

Canvey Island 2         90 all out
Chignal                       92-2
Canvey lost by 8 wickets

Words cannot explain how bad Canvey 2's were in this one-sided encounter. If going into the game with only 8 men wasn't bad enough, no one performed remotely up to standard. Only John Scammell (27) and Dave Higgins (21) showed any stomach for the battle while at the crease, and it was left to evergreen veteran Terry Castille (2 for 26) to fight a lone hand with the ball. Despite it all there was still time for Chignal's Rimmer to claim five wickets in perhaps Canvey's worst performance of the season. It will now be down to skipper Ken Roberts to lift the troops for the upcoming bottom-off-the-table clashes with Rayleigh and Hockley.

 Sunday
Municipal College            174-7
Canvey Island                 138-4
Match drawn

The merits of playing time games were called into question again on Sunday as Canvey and Municipal College played out one of the most boring draws you are ever likely to have the misfortune to see on Sunday. Batting first College plainly laid out their intentions by crawling to a total of 174 from fully 49 overs. Despite fifties from N. Worship and M. Worship, the innings never got out of second gear, and it was clear for all to see that they were more scared of losing than actually playing the game with the intention of forcing a victory. Paul Ward and John Gunn attempted to lift the torpor by playing a succession of attacking shots at the beginning of the Canvey reply, but once Ward was dismissed for a classy 60, the momentum disappeared and a bore draw was inevitable. Displaying some excellent timing all round the wicket Gunn was unlucky to be bowled seven short of a well-deserved half-century as the match fizzled out.
