Saturday
Canvey Island I
318-5
Writtle II
129-9
Canvey won by 189 runs
The Canvey Island run machine continued unabated as the Writtle
bowlers were smacked all round the park on the way to an utterly
comprehensive win by 189 runs. Leading the way, almost inevitably, was
Paul Ward, who elegantly stroked his way to a career-best 160,
containing 19 fours and 4 sixes. Terry Snowdon (58) and Richie Burrill
(37) also cashed in, engaging in partnerships of 139 and 93 with Ward
for the second and third wickets respectively. They were all
particularly severe on Ayers, who went for 63 off only 7 overs. In
reply, Canvey found it difficult to prise out the Writtle batsmen as
they played conservatively in a bid to attain a couple of batting
points. Six catches went to ground with Terry Cockell the unlucky bowler
on most occasions. Two wickets for John Gunn and Rikki Broadmore, and
three from Gary Snowdon were not enough to bring maximum points as
Writtle’s last pair held out at the end.
Canvey Island II
185 all out
Springfield IV
186-9
Canvey lost by 1 wicket
Canvey
sadly came unstuck in a thriller on Saturday as Springfield squeaked
home by a solitary wicket. Five missed chances and a couple of dubious
umpiring decisions came back to haunt the Islanders as the last pair
knocked off the 15 required for victory when the came together. Darren
Wainer’s 5 for 37 proved to be in vain as the final blow could not be
struck. Defeat was also hard on Ken Roberts and Dave Higgins who did
more than most to put Canvey in a match-winning position. Continuing his
good form of recent weeks Roberts smacked a second consecutive
half-century, eventually falling just four short of a century. Higgins
employed the long handle to good effect on his way to an even 50. Once
again though, the lack of batting support proved Canvey’s undoing with
no other player capable of making double figures.
