CANVEY THRASH SOUTH WOODHAM IN TOP-OF-TABLE
SHOOTOUT
Saturday
Canvey Island 1 333-7
South Woodham Ferrers 3
91 all out
Canvey won by 242 runs
The top-of-the-table clash turned into a rout for Canvey as
they comprehensively destroyed the league leaders at Smallgains.
Records were smashed all over the place, not only for the biggest ever
Canvey league win, but also for the most runs ever scored by one team
at Canvey’s home ground. The mood was set right from the off as Paul
Ward launched a brutal assault on the South Woodham bowlers. His
audacious 63 contained no fewer than 14 boundaries. When he was
dismissed in the 14th over, Terry Snowdon (77) and Richie
Burrill continued to flay the bowling all round the ground. Burrill
went on to make a brilliant 118 before heaving across the line to a
straight one. Canvey even had the luxury of playing out the last over
for a maiden, confident that their record score would be enough for
victory. After making early breakthroughs the weather began to close
in and rain threatened to deprive them of the deserved win. With the
rain getting increasingly heavy, three wickets apiece from the
excellent Terry Cockell and John Gunn saw the Islanders home. This
result opens up the prospect of a league victory, with two matches to
go, and only five points now separating the two sides.
DASHER DAVIS DRIVES CANVEY HOME
Rayleigh 3
178 all out
Canvey Island 2
179-2
Canvey won by 8 wickets
A
superb maiden fifty from Ben Davis was the main highlight of this
game, which Canvey dominated from the start. Youngster Davis was
dismissed just before the victory was sealed for a well-crafted 70.
Having been promoted up the order in recent weeks, Davis has responded
well to the challenge and has posted a few decent scores, culminating
in this fine knock. Matt Snowdon, in his first game for two months
also weighed in with an unbeaten 52 to see Canvey over the winning
line. The opening attack of Dave Higgins and Dave Knox were
responsible for putting Canvey in the position of strength, with three
wickets apiece, Knox bowling a trademark hostile opening spell and
conceding only 18 runs from his 12 overs. Only G. Roberts (72) offered
any resistance, and without the 42 wides gifted by the Canvey bowlers,
Rayleigh would have struggled to reach the hundred mark.
