Canvey Island Cricket Club Results
Weekend 17th – 18th August 2002
Saturday
Canvey Island 320-2
Tillingham II
129 all out
Canvey won by 191 runs
Records fell in abundance for Canvey in Saturday’s game against
Tillingham. Chief among the record-breakers was Paul Ward, who for the
second time this season smashed the individual batting record. His 161
not out, containing 19 fours and 5 sixes, was the highest score seen
at Smallgains. In partnership with Richie Burrill (100 not out) the
Canvey record for the highest partnership was also broken. The two men
carted the Tillingham bowling for an unbroken 237 for the third
wicket. On a hot day, the sight of the ball being despatched to all
parts of the ground over a lightening fast outfield was enough to
drive the Tillingham players to despair. Six wickets from Russell
Abbott on his return to the Canvey side, further deepened the despair.
To cap it all, four of Abbott’s wickets came in one over, another
record. Not surprisingly, Canvey emerged winners by a whopping 191
runs, setting up a mouth-watering top-of-the-table clash with Fyfield
next week.
Chignall II
192 all out
Canvey Island II
197-5
Canvey won by 5 wickets
Ken Roberts led Canvey to only their fourth league victory of the
season. His 81 provided the cornerstone of the Canvey march to victory
in pursuit of 193. Roberts was his usual belligerent self, caning
boundaries on both sides of the wicket. His dismissal, often the
catalyst for a Canvey collapse, proved only to set the stage for Mark
Gorman and Dave Higgins to finish the job. Gorman, capitalising on a
rich vein of run-scoring form of late, contributed 27 to the
match-winning partnership, with Higgins an aggressive 24 not out,
clinching the match with a huge six. Both had earlier starred with the
ball, taking two wickets apiece, along with Darren Wainer.
Sunday
Burnham
233 all out
Canvey Island 226-7
Canvey lost by 7 runs
Canvey
came up short in a gallant run-chase on Sunday. In reply to Burham’s
impressive 233 all out, Paul Ward and John Gunn got Canvey off to a
flying start, and posted their highest opening partnership of the
season of 175. At this stage it looked like Canvey were favourites to
win, but as so often happens, it was a case of so near yet so far, as
the traditional Canvey collapse took hold. Ward was agonisingly
dismissed for 99, the second time in two seasons that fate has
befallen him, and Gunn for 68, with no one else able to carry on the
good work. Steve Stacey (21 not out) tried to salvage the game at the
last, but was stuck at the wrong end in the final over. Burham’s
Jalal, had earlier taken a liking to the Canvey attack, smacking the
bowling around for a somewhat fortuitous 103. Youngsters Ellis
Skidmore and Mitchell Flewers mopped up the tail, taking two wickets
apiece.
