 Saturday's game at Smallgains was littered with some superb individual performances from the Islanders, but a mixture of poor bowling and unfathomable captaincy led to another disappointing defeat. After a bright start in the field, the Canvey bowlers were put to the sword by Adams (109) and White (68). At one stage Rayleigh looked odds-on to post a score in excess of 300, but the introduction of Nathan Collins proved a turning point. Rushing back from the cancelled 1^st team fixture, Collins entered the fray and took 4 for 66 in ten penetrative overs. His heroics restricted Rayleigh to 254, a total which would have been lower but for the reluctance of the Islanders to post any boundary fielders. A monumental effort was required by the Canvey batsmen to reach such a target, and despite a fighting 22 from John Scammell, once skipper Ken Roberts (55) and Dave Higgins (37) were dismissed the Canvey challenge folded.
