Weekend 15th June

Saturday
Canvey Island I          247-6

Tillingham II                79 all out
Canvey won by 168 runs

On the day that England advanced in the World Cup smacking three goals passed Denmark, Canvey handed out a smacking of their own to Tillingham. Gary Burton was the destroyer in chief with a murderous innings of 101. Tillingham had no answer to his powerful hitting as the ball disappeared frequently to all parts of the ground, once into a neighbouring garden from where it never returned. Les Burrill weighed in with a quickfire 43 to see Canvey passed the 200-mark once again. Tillingham lost a wicket to only the second ball of their reply, and quickly folded to the pace of Richie Burrill (3 for 20) and Gary Snowdon (3 for 28). A third catch for the excellent Neil Casson rounded things off for Canvey and a comprehensive 168 run win.

Canvey Island II          98-9
Chignall                       102-1
Chignall won by 9 wickets

Canvey II were not as lucky as the first team as they were the ones on the end of a thumping on Saturday. Having been put in by the Chignall skipper they could only limp their way to a somewhat miserable 98 in their 40 overs. Darren Wainer top scored with a patient 23 before being stumped. Paul Synnott and Ben Davis both weighed in with 19 apiece but no other batsman approached double figures. Howard’s 69 for Chignall ensured that the match was over almost as quickly as it began, Canvey only bowling 20 overs in reply. Dan Flewers was the only Canvey bowler to meet with any success, in a game the Islanders will want to forget as quickly as possible.
