Canvey Island Cricket Club Results
Weekend 15th- 16th September
Saturday
Canvey Island 204-4
Bluehouse 2
127 all out
Canvey won by 77 runs
Paul Ward blasted past the 1000-run mark for the
season on his way to a blistering 102 not out, which was the cornerstone
of Canvey’s victory against Bluehouse. In a game that was a prelude to
one of the fixtures Canvey will enjoy in Division 7 of the Mid-Essex
league next season, Ward took the opportunity to gain a psychological
advantage over the Bluehouse attack by dispatching them to all parts.
One particularly memorable shot flew over square leg for a towering six.
However, it could all have been so different if a simple gully chance
had been accepted with only a few runs on the board. A second easy
chance was spilled with Ward in the nineties, allowing him to post three
figures for the second time this season. Gary Snowdon (46) also got in
on the act during a fourth wicket partnership of 102, falling just short
of a second career half-century. Once the Ward pyrotechnics were over it
was time for the bowlers to excel, none more so than Richie Burrill, who
claimed season’s best figures of 4 for 6 from 7 hostile overs. With
Les Snowdon and Dave Higgins also claiming two wickets apiece, an easy
victory was wrapped up in good time.

Canvey Island
114-7
Canvey lost by 57 runs
A marvellous all-round performance from Glenn
Eckett was the highlight of a disappointing Canvey showing. Eckett, has
endured a difficult debut season up until now but took his chance to
show exactly what he could do with the ball, claiming a wicket with his
first delivery and going on to post career-best figures of 3 for 16.
With Trevor Fossey also returning season’s best figures of 2 for 36,
it was a pleasing change of fortune for some of Canvey’s lesser
lights. Not to be outdone though, club leading wicket-taker John Gunn
also bagged three further victims to put himself within striking
distance of the 50-mark. However, Gunn wasn’t so lucky with the bat,
the victim of a horrendous first over mix-up with skipper Paul Ward, to
be run out without facing a ball. Michael Gunn (14) top-scored, but it
was Eckett (13) and Fossey (12) who claimed the limelight by
complementing their bowling performances with career-bests with the bat
as well. There was even time for a gloriously defiant 9 not out from
Karen Richardson, stubbornly resisting the Greenfield bowlers for 10
overs to notch her first runs for the club. This light-hearted end to
the game was unable to mask the fact that Canvey were outplayed and
performed poorly in a game which had an end-of-season air to it.
