Peter
Cook led the way on Saturday with a cracking display of attacking
batting as Canvey eased to a comprehensive 124 run victory. Cook came
to the wicket with only 13.5 overs of the innings remaining, but
blasted the ball to all parts of the ground, unleashing his trademark
late cut and pull shot to good effect. He walked off with a
magnificent 80 not out, having contributed to an unbroken 126 run
partnership for the fourth wicket with Richie Burrill (57 not out).
Burrill played a superb supporting role to Cook, as the two men
overshadowed the earlier contributions from Terry Snowdon (69) and
Paul Ward (50). A target of 283 to win was always likely to prove too
much for an under-strength Stock side, and with Terry Cockell claiming
three quick wickets, so it proved. Dave Shroder also chipped in with 2
for 12 as spin won the day for Canvey.

Canvey Island II
153-5
Canvey won by 5 wickets
Ken
Roberts proved there is still life in the old dog yet by producing a
vintage innings to lead Canvey to an easy victory against Hockley.
Roberts carted the bowling for a rapid 63, 50 of which came in
boundaries. Martin Robinson (38) provided fine support, with Nathan
Collins chipping in with 20 not out to see Canvey home with more than
16 overs to spare. Earlier Collins and his brother Sam had starred
with the ball, Nathan returning figures of 2 for 28 and Sam a
season’s best 3 for 27. Dave Higgins also claimed 3 for 8 coming on
later in the innings and cleaning up the tail, giving Canvey an
eminently gettable victory target.
Sunday
Canvey Island
177-9
Echo Trojans 179-3
Canvey lost by 7 wickets
An
under-strength Canvey put on a good show on Sunday, but the lack of
quality back-up bowling proved to be the Achilles heel. Paul Synnott,
showing the best form of his career, was the mainstay of the Canvey
innings, caressing a fine 69 with quality strokes to all parts of the
ground. John Gunn contributed 30 at the top of the order, but with
only Nathan Collins (21) of the other batsmen passing 20, the total of
177 looked to be 20 or 30 short of a competitive total. Sam Collins
and Gary Snowdon bowled well at the start of the Echo reply, but
without much luck. Lacking the back-up bowling to maintain the
pressure D. Winn took full advantage, clinching the match with ten
overs to spare, and raising his own century in the process.
