Canvey Island Cricket Club Results
Weekend 14th - 15th July
ABBOTT HAS DAY
TO REMEMBER
Saturday
Canvey Island 1
168-5
Rettendon 2
87 all out
Canvey won by 81 runs
Even the atrocious weather conditions of the past
weekend were not enough to prevent Canvey's victory march on Saturday
against a poor Rettendon side. The star turn was provided by Russell
Abbott who produced the outstanding performance of the season so far
by smashing an unbeaten 100 during Canvey's innings and then returning
to claim 5 for 17 to send Canvey on their way to an easy win. Despite
a sluggish start in partnership with Neil Casson (38), Abbott burst
into life in the final ten overs of a game reduced to 37 overs per
side due to persistent rain. Smashing 8 four's and a 6 during his
superb knock, Abbott brought up his first ton of the season, and the
first in the club this year, from the final ball of the Canvey
innings.
CANVEY 2'S SINK
TO ALL-TIME LOW
Canvey Island 2
50 all out
Brookweald 2
51-2
Canvey lost by 8 wickets
After three wins in a row confidence was
high that Canvey 2's could continue their winning run against a
Brookweald side that they had been unlucky to lose to earlier in the
season. However, the confidence could not have been more misplaced, as
the Islanders slumped to their worst defeat of the season and set a
record for their lowest score in the process. Only 33 of the scheduled
90 overs were required to complete the whole match as Canvey succumbed
to a startling spell of 7 for 13 from Brookweald's Forrest. Only Ken
Roberts with a typically robust 25 managed double figures in a game
that Canvey will want to forget as quickly as it was over.
GUNN OOZES
CLASS AS SNOWDON STRIKES GOLD
Sunday
Canvey Island 226-8
Rayleigh Fairview
196-8
Canvey won by 30 runs
Sunday
saw a day of firsts for the Canvey side. John Gunn (71 not out)
slammed his first fifty of the season, and Les Snowdon claimed the
first two wickets of his Canvey career to propel Canvey to victory.
John Scammell (51) and Gunn provided the main impetus of the Canvey
innings, with Gunn particularly severe on the Rayleigh bowling. Eight
boundaries were blasted either side of the wicket in a classical
display of clean hitting to go with a perfectly timed 6, as over a
hundred runs came from the final 15 overs. In reply Rayleigh were
immediately in trouble as spinner Ben Davis claimed two cheap wickets,
but it was Les Snowdon who ended any hopes of victory, removing
dangerman Moore for 33 and then going on to claim a second wicket in
as many balls to set himself up for a unique hat-trick next time out.
