Canvey Island Cricket Club Results
Weekend 13th – 14th July
Saturday
Canvey Island I
189-8
Burnham Sports II
74 all out
Canvey won by 115 runs
Put the ball in John Gunn’s hands and
more often than not he will make something happen. He didn’t
disappoint on Saturday, as he produced another one of those
devastating spells of bowling that he is capable of. Despite seemingly
being unable to cure a no-ball problem, or keep the ball consistently
on the off peg, Gunn snapped up 5 for 15 to send Burnham spiralling
into misery. With three of his victims playing on, that particular
mode of dismissal proved to be the most popular, Gary Snowdon also
picking up another in his two-wicket haul. The slow pitch and longish
outfield made scoring difficult all day, as demonstrated by the
normally free-scoring Paul Ward and Terry Snowdon. They battled to put
on 77 for the second wicket, Ward collecting only four boundaries in
his 42 and Snowdon finding the rope only five times in his 54. No
other player passed 25 preventing Canvey amassing 200 for only the
second time in the season. Gunn’s wickets meant the total proved to
be more than enough.
Rayleigh III
156 all out
Canvey Island II
160-6
Canvey won by 4 wickets
Nathan Collins produced a fantastic
all-round display to propel Canvey to their third league win of the
season. Collins returned a season’s best 5 for 19 with the ball,
ripping the heart out of the entire Rayleigh middle-order. He then
starred in a match-winning partnership of 34 with Paul Synnott to
steer Canvey home to a four wicket win. Collins finished 17 not out,
and Synnott 13 not out, to finish off the earlier good work from
Darren Wainer (29) and Dave Higgins (50). Higgins was his usual
belligerent self with the bat, and his dismissal could have proved
costly. However, Collins proved to be the main for the big occasion
and fittingly hit the winning runs to give Canvey the win.
Sunday
Canvey Island 269-5
Rayleigh Fairview
53 all out
Canvey won by 216 runs
Think
of the most one-sided contest you can and then double it. This was
what happened at Smallgains on Sunday. Finding themselves at 21-3 you
would have thought Canvey were in trouble. Not a bit of it. Rayleigh
Fairview didn’t know what hit them as first Dave Shroder (58) and
then Richie Burrill piled on the agony. Both men smashed the ball to
all parts of the ground, Burrill being particularly aggressive upon
reaching his own fifty. It has to be said that the bowling and field
placings were embarrassingly poor, but the ball still has to be put
away. Burrill did this with aplomb, bringing up his first century of
the season, and eventually finishing unbeaten on 121. He and Darren
Wainer (35) shared in the second century stand of the innings, putting
on 124 for the fifth wicket. Skipper Paul Ward, coming in at the
unfamiliar no.7 spot also got in on the act, hitting the last ball of
the innings high over midwicket for six. Staring into the abyss
Rayleigh got out of the traps like a wounded greyhound, losing five
quick wickets to John Gunn (3 for 12) and Glen Eckett (2 for 21).
Stumbling to a pathetic 53 all out they handed Canvey their biggest
win of the season.
