Weekend 12th-13th May
Saturday
Canvey Island 1
163 all out
Rettendon 2
136 all out
Canvey won by 27 runs
Although the score
line looks comfortable, Canvey made hard work of their opening league
game of the season against Rettendon. A solid opening partnership of
54 by Paul Ward (18) and Matthew Snowdon (31) failed to hint at what
was to come. Six middle-order wickets fell in quick succession, and it
was once again left to Richie Burrill to propel Canvey to something
approaching respectability. Carrying on the superb form with the bat
he showed last week at Pegasus, Burrill smashed a magnificent 58 not
out to lift Canvey to a total of 163. Despite losing three early
wickets to a hostile spell of pace bowling from Gary Burton Rettendon
looked well placed to take victory. However, a devastating burst of
three wickets in five overs from Paul Ward put the skids under the
Rettendon reply, and when Paul Synnott cleaned out the tail with two
wickets in consecutive deliveries they were still 27 runs short of the
victory target.
Brookweald 2
145 for 9
Canvey Island 2
97 all out
Canvey lost by 48 runs
Canvey 2's will be kicking themselves
after succumbing to a weak Brookweald side in a game they should have
won. After restricting Brookweald to a mere 145 in their 45 overs,
Canvey would have expected to gain a positive result. However, no one
really got themselves going on a slow pitch, and poor running between
the wickets contrived to create three middle-order run-outs. Only a
belligerent 27 from Dave Higgins, and patient 24 from Steve Hale
hinted that Canvey might make a game of it. Brookweald were indebted
to a chancy 55 not out from veteran Forest, which ultimately proved
enough for victory.
Sunday
Broomhill
169 all out
Canvey Island
119 all out
Canvey lost by 50 runs
Canvey
came out second best on Sunday in a game between two severely
under-strength sides. Both teams made use of the large gaps in the
outfield to knock the ball around and accumulate plenty of singles,
but the stronger bowling resources of Broomhill proved too much for
Canvey at the end of the day. Broomhill's innings was built around a
fluent 74 from opener S. Duke. Russell Abbott was the pick of the
Canvey bowlers, with an impressive return of 2 for 20 from nine
economical overs. The Canvey reply started well, with John Gunn (29)
and Paul Ward posting a 75-run opening partnership. However, once Ward
was out for a measured 44 the innings folded, the last seven wickets
falling for only 35 runs. After a long unbeaten run on Sunday's last
season the side has now experienced two defeats in a row, and will be
looking to turn things around against Westley next weekend.
