Canvey Island Cricket Club Results
Weekend 11th – 12th August
WARD
WHACKS TERLING
Saturday
Canvey Island 1
214-7
Terling 2
124 all out
Canvey won by 90 runs
A superb all-round display by Paul Ward was the
cornerstone of Canvey’s easy win against Terling on Saturday. Ward top scored
with 46 in the Canvey innings and then opened the bowling to good
effect as he returned figures of 4 for 31, ripping out the top order
in the process. But it wasn’t just a one-man show, Ward was ably
assisted by the Burrill brothers, Richie (44) turning the tables on
the previous match and out-scoring Les (39), and by Terry Cockell who
also claimed four wickets with his unorthodox left-arm spin. The win
puts Canvey clear in second place in Division 8 of the league, with
the top-of-the-table clash with South Woodham Ferrers to come next
week.
SORRY CANVEY SLUMP DESPITE SCAMMELL EFFORTS
Bluehouse 3
241-7
Canvey Island 2
157 all out
Canvey lost by 84 runs
A strange quirk of this game was the 42 wides
bowled by the Bluehouse team. Without these Canvey would have struggled
to muster 100 runs, as they found life extremely difficult against a
strong Bluehouse side. Only John Scammell (31) made any significant
contribution as he raced past 400 league runs for the season, and
without the wides it would have been a much sorrier tale. Hunt (40) and
Guttridge (65) put the Canvey bowling to the sword early on, and two
late wickets for Darren Wainer were scant consolation for the power
hitting that had gone on before.
UMPIRING CONTROVERSY MARS CANVEY WIN
Sunday
Canvey Island 178-7
Mallards
125 all out
Canvey won by 53 runs
A blistering 85 from skipper Paul Ward
was the highlight of this encounter against Mallards. Ward dispatched
the bowling to all parts as he thrashed 12 fours and a huge six over
long-off. He was particularly severe on the bowling upon reaching fifty,
striking four sumptuous boundaries off one Cox over. Gary Snowdon (28)
also got in on the act before being controversially dismissed caught off
a ball clearly over shoulder height. He trudged off disconsolate, but
there was no call of no-ball forthcoming from umpire Dave Knox. The
Mallards reply was undermined almost immediately following an inspired
bowling change which saw Dave Shroder having his first bowl of the
season. Having recovered from back problems the off-spinner ripped out
three top-order batsmen to return highly impressive figures of 3 for 29.
Darren Wainer was equally impressive with the ball as he cleaned up the
tail to end with career-best figures of 4 for 14.
