Canvey Island Cricket Club Results
Weekend 10th – 11th May
Saturday
Foulness
166-5
Canvey Island I
169-1
Canvey won by 9 wickets
Canvey
bounced back from their opening defeat with a comprehensive win
against Foulness at Smallgains on Saturday. Despite lacking
penetration on a typical Canvey wicket Foulness were not able to post
the sort of total that would have been competitive. Gary Snowdon
chipped in with 3 for 36 to keep the scoring rate down, leaving
Foulness about 50 short of a par score. Paul Ward (105) and Neil
Casson (38 not out) put the target into context when they came to bat,
Ward in particular accelerating in spectacular fashion upon passing
his half century to ensure victory inside 32 overs.

Canvey lost by 9 runs
There are
many ways to lose a cricket match, but not many of them involve
capitulating from 94 for 1 to 110 all out. Canvey II’s have always
sought out more weird and wacky ways of gifting victory to the
opposition, but this was one of their better efforts. Nine wickets
fell for 16 runs as defeat was well and truly snatched from the jaws
of victory. Defeat was particularly hard on skipper Dave Higgins who
did more than most to put Canvey in with a shout. He followed up
season’s best figures of 7 for 28 with a rapid 40 with the bat, but
ultimately it was his dismissal that precipitated the collapse. Five
ducks littered the Canvey card, four of which were golden, Canvey
slipping to an embarrassing nine run loss.
Sunday
St. Aiden’s
214-9
Canvey Island 91 all out
Canvey lost by 123 runs
Canvey
made it two collapses in two days with another dreadful batting
display on Sunday against St. Aiden’s. Another comfortable win
seemed on the cards at the off following on from last year’s victory
in same fixture when Terry Cockell snaffled 4 for 28 with his
unorthodox brand of left-arm spin to restrict St. Aiden’s to 214
from their 40 overs. However, no one was able to stay for long in the
middle as Canvey subsided to 49 for 9. Only a stubborn last wicket
stand of 41 from Paul Synnott (33) and Gary Snowdon (10 not out)
prevented a more humiliating defeat.
