Canvey Island Cricket Club Results
Weekend 1st – 2nd September
Canvey
capture league title at first attempt
Saturday
Canvey Island 1
212-8
Mountnessing
157 all out
Canvey won by 55 runs
Canvey 1’s capped a fine season by pipping South Woodham
Ferrers at the post to take the league Division 8 title. With South
Woodham unable to gain the win they required against bitter rivals
Woodham Mortimer, Canvey were able to stroll to the title they
deserved all season. This came as a fitting climax to the season,
especially with South Woodham destroyed at Smallgains only three weeks
ago. This victory, with another haul of maximum points was hard work
compared to some others earlier in the year. Matt Snowdon (63)
provided the backbone to the Canvey innings, and was ably assisted by
Paul Ward (33), Terry Snowdon (32) and Dave Knox (30). Knox also
starred with the ball, claiming 5 for 36 from 12 hostile overs. With
Ward applying the coup de grace at the end with two late wickets,
Canvey were left to celebrate a job well done, and a league title in
the their first season in the new league.
Canvey Island 2
197-6
Springfield 4
198-7
Canvey lost by 3 wickets
The season ended on a disappointing note for the Canvey 2’s
on Saturday with a second straight defeat. Despite showing much
promise in some matches throughout the season, consistency has not
proved to be the watchword, and so it proved again against
Springfield. A cavalier 98 from John Scammell looked to have earned
Canvey a 6th win of the season. His innings was a wonder to
behold, peppered with boundaries, and he was unlucky to be dismissed
two short of a deserved ton as he attempted to protect the tail.
However, despite this, and the fact that Dave Higgins (3 for 37) and
Dan Flewers (3 for 54) managed to reduce Springfield to 30 for 4,
Canvey were still unable to turn the screw. A lack of back-up bowling
was to prove their undoing, not for the first time this season, as the
Springfield middle-order staged a recovery, and with the aid of 30
wides made it over the finishing line.
Sunday
West Billericay
154 all out
Canvey Island
157-2
Canvey won by 8 wickets
Attempting
to play a competitive cricket match with seven men is always likely to
be a tall order even against a team of one-legged dwarves, but when
you are playing against a strong team of proper cricketers you are
destined to struggle. This was exactly the scenario to befall poor
West Billericay on Sunday as they manly attempted to play a decent
game against Canvey. A total of 154 would have proved challenging with
a full complement of fielders, but with only five men to spread around
things were going to be difficult. Unfortunately, Billericay came up
against Matt Snowdon in prime form, who complemented his fifty the day
before with a brutal innings of 109. Snowdon showed no mercy for the
Billericay predicament as he launched the ball to all parts, more than
once dispatching it into the car park. With this calculated aggression
the game was all over within 17 overs of the Canvey reply. The only
glimmer of light for Billericay came when Snowdon’s fellow opener
Ben Davis, with all the fielders on the boundary, succeeded in
chipping the ball back to the bowler. He trudged off mortified as
players from both sides creased up with laughter. However, there was
no doubting that this was Matt Snowdon’s day.
